Metaphor played a big part in this conversation. First to place Jonathan atop a mountain to help him see his unique perspective.
Then to illustrate that when viewing one of his beloved films in a crowded theatre, a particular scene that is so moving to him may not be to anyone else, not even his closest companions.
And finally as the means, his super power even, to reach them and help them see beyond what is.
And that’s vital to a leader with a vision of what could be but isn’t yet. Because if we don’t see it, we will not act to help realize it.
It’s all too easy to assume that because we see it, others do too. But we are each a composite of different experiences, expertise, and insights, all of which gives us a unique perspective. We therefore may see what others don’t.
It’s a critical distinction. And one that can make or break every leadership initiative.
These last few Amplify questions have confirmed for Jonathan the importance of language to leadership. And that’s right, it is.
The challenge for him now, and for every leader, is to discern how to use language to help others see the vision of what could be.
